Top 50 Engineering College in India

Last few days were pretty busy for JobKiBaate team. After hard work of 1 month we are able to devise statistical method to ‘rank Engineering Colleges’ across country.
Details are posted as below:

Why engineering colleges ranking?

Consider this:
Ø  For fresher to decide the best option available.
Ø   For colleges to know what they need to improve and where they stand in the pecking order.
Ø   For recruiters and human resource managers to decide the college they would visit for campus interviews and negotiates pay packages.

What is new in this ranking?
For giving rank to the best engineering college in India, I have considered the following parameters
1.   Selection process                 -20%
2.   Academic excellence            -20%
3.   Infrastructure                       -20%
4.   Research work                    -20%
5.   Placement                           -20%

What is Inside India's $35 PC?

It is a PC, not a toy. And it works quite fine. But the actual cost once it is commercially produced could be a little more...

It is not without reason that Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn called India the land from where he could learn some frugal engineering. While Ghosn may have had Tata Nano on his mind, the case, it seems, is no different when it comes to the PCs.

India's $35 PC—that has evoked extreme reactions from different sections—may not be a market ready product yet like Nano, but it is certainly not a toy. Dataquest managed to lay its hands on one of the devices and found that despite a few shortcomings, it is actually a working tablet with fairly smooth functionality.

First things first. It is actually an Android-based tablet, not Linux-based, as reported by a section of the media. The processor is an ARM 9 (Freescale i.MX233). It is encased in a rubber frame, and the look and feel is quite good. Since the PC has not been named yet, the shiny encryption on the rubberized cover is Android.

The tablet has  Wi-Fi connectivity, a bulit-in camera and has everything that one can expect from an Android Tablet: calendar, i-reader and other apps. It has a touch screen panel with a stylus and a virtual keyboard. On the left, there is a mini SD card slot, SIM card slot, two mini USB ports, a video out and a headphone jack too. It has internal memory of 2 GB. And the fact that there two USB ports available, one can easily fit in a USB keyboard and mouse if desired. It has a solar power option too, which though may not be an invention, is good enough if comes within the $35.

That is all about specs...

So then, what all can the little master essentially do? Already developed within the IIT systems, the tablet has preloaded educational software and most of the lectures are aimed to be delivered with it. Videos of lectures can be loaded to the tablet and students won’t necessarily have to miss one anymore. This writer had the opportunity to watch one by Prof T S Navarauan.

In the two hour long involvement with the device, besides getting a feel of it and trying hard to understand Prof Navarauan, this writer also managed to look at its other functions like the media player, open office, multiple content viewer, check mails and located CyberMedia office on Google Map, even greeted a friend on Skype and read few paragraphs using PDF reader. That is really a long list. And at one time one felt that one was probably overloading it with too many commands, but the good thing is it didn’t give up. It did not hang.

What, however, was a little difficult to deal with was that it doesn’t have a hard-drive. Another drawback is that  the webcam is on the back panel. Also, its 7″ 800×480 touchscreen was quite resistive – not bad but resistive. This is supposedly to bring down the cost, as a classy touchscreen is sure to bring up the cost largely. Android being the console, the software for it can be from anywhere. The device will always be dependent on open-source software, which I feel if used on a regular basis, would need some access to regular technical support. Microsoft has apprently already offered its Windows CE Software for the tablet.

What is $35 in $35 PC?
While the device passed the test, the story gets a little diluted when one comes to calculating the cost. The $35 that has got the world make notice, Dataquest learns, is broadly the material cost and not the total cost of the finished product. That means the production cost and other indirect costs are not included in this. Of course, the price will still be $35 because of subsidies, but the cost would be a little more. But considering the facts, it will be 20% to 40% extra, not 100% extra, if it comes to the commercial market.

This is how the cost break-up looks like: the ARM9 Processor costs $5, memory costs for $3, WiFi for $4, other discrete components for $3, battery for $5, and the 7″ 800×480 touchscreen for $15. That makes it $35.

The Story Behind the PC
The inspiration to make this tablet ,of course came from the MIT’s $100 Laptop, informs two people who have been closely associated with the project. In fact, unlike what has been reported by media, it did not come out of student projects. It was Kapil Sibal who was personally involved in ensuring that it happens. And his initial target was making a PC for $10. He apparently approached a few Indian companies but got lukewarm experience. It is then that he approached the institutes. Research scholars in four IITs—Bomaby, Madras, Kharagpur, and Kanpur—and IISc Bangalore—were put together for the project. It was all done centrally as many of the people who worked on teams at each of the locations, in fact, did not even know who was working in another institute. The motherboard design actually came from a student in VIT Vellore and the PCB was made by IIT Kanpur on the design. The idea was to make it at $10. But finally, it could go down to $35.

However, the research team members are hopeful that if the hardware price-drop continues, in future it could go down further.

About 8,500 colleges are expected to sign up for the first phase of roll-out. Reportedly, the Manipur Government has already announced its order of 75,000 tablets for the students of its state. The production is expected to start in next three months overseas but will be shifted back to the country after sometime.

It is learnt that the Chief of ‘One Laptop Per Child’ (OLPC), Nicholas Negroponte has invited the HRD ministry officials to visit Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and asked the Indian Government to make the laptop open for the students of other countries too. And you thought our calling it frugal engineering was just some journalistic excess?

ORACLE review

Brand Value: Good Recognition

Career growth and onsite opportunities? NO onsite opportunity, no rapid promotion. But it will add value in your career.

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department? Very good work env. No daily attendance required. All depend on your manager. You can communicate with your native language. Team meeting happen every month (like get together). So good interactions.

Work pressure/Work – life balance. It varies with projects. You get enough time to finish your work so not much worry.

Satisfaction with salary and quality of work: CTC will be high but in-hand monthly will not be much. SuperAnnuation and gratuity eat a lot, which you will get after 3 yrs and 5 yrs resp. You will get good work here but it depends on the team.

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? Product dev.

Job security. Good

Some positives and negatives of the company. You will be branded but may not satisfied with monthly in-hand as compared to your CTC.

INFOSYS review

Brand value, Career growth and onsite opportunities?Good Brand Value, Career Growth Is Slowing Down, too slow as you grow above project manager, onsite is huge..

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/wteams or department?
Very good work environment..

Work pressure/Work – life balance.
Decent, Better than Wipro

Satisfaction with salary and quality of work.
Salary too low, Quality of work is low..

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent?
Maintenance

Job security.
Good..no one fired easily

Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why?
For an average college, Infi is best..

Vital Statistics:Fresher salary, Total No of employees, India headcount, Normal %age salary hikes or any bonuses..

CTS review

Brand Value: Yuppie I guess Cognizant as potential advantage in this. It maintains a good brand in India. But its low salary puts it on the other side of this brandL

Career growth and on-site opportunities? Career growth is not very fast. Normally anybody has to wait for 3 years for first promotion as Associate from Programmer Analyst. Onsite opportunities depend on the individual project. But overall I guess in Cognizant onsite opportunities are more than any of the other companies like TCS/Wipro/Infy etc

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department? Work Environment is not so good. My personal experience is pathetic in this company. In Chennai maximum of the members would be Tamil (this is obvious), but onsite meeting in my team is also in Tamil. So for me the work environment is pathetic.
Communication b/w departments are fine and I appreciate this.

Work pressure/Work – life balance. Depends on project, but overall its fine.
Satisfaction with salary and quality of work. Very very very poor. A simple example is the pay package for 2006 pass outs and 2007 passouts.I am 2006 batch. Our Package was 2.11(includes 20K incentive). Our Juniors were offered 2.50(includes 20K incentive). And our revise package w.e.f May 2007 is 2.60(20K incentive). So we have only 10K annually salary diff from our juniors .At the same time the salary of Infy and TCS for 2006 batch is 2.75L Plus. 3.01L for 2010 batch...Very bad quality of work overall.

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? Mostly services.

Job security. 110% unless you are very poor performing (I don’t think anybody will be)

Some positives and negatives of the company. Not good if you want to develop your technical skills. Neither good in pay part. I don’t thing any positive part of this company.

Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why? A big No for friends. There are so many reasons which are already discussed.

Patni review

Brand Value I heard that Patni has good brand value..

Career growth and onsite opportunities? one among top 3 IT companies in this regard

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department? In general work environment is informal and good, however it depends on the kind of project..

Work pressure/Work – life balance. Pressure… Again…depends on project. I would say not very much different from other IT companies. Work – Life balance – one can achieve it if he/she is very serious about it

Satisfaction with salary and quality of work. Salary – Its not on par with market value. An exception is that appraisals in 2007 have been very good.

Quality of work – depends on the domain, kind of project(development/maintenance/support).Patni has mostly maintenance projects.

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? Not sure about exact percent but basically Patni is into Services. May be a bit of product development stuff.

Job security. Better than any other IT company in India.

Some positives and negatives of the company.
positive – Job Security, Onsite opportunities, Good responsibilities at an early stage in one’s career, robust processes, Good Training Programs.
negative– SALARY, Not enough transparency into appraisal process, recruitment process not rigid(no where do you find a required % of 55 for freshers J) IF you are not keen about money Patni is the place for you...

STM review

Brand value, Career growth and onsite opportunities?
Brand value – Good, These things depend on your department and projects, this could be very different for person to person. But yeah, onsite opportunities and career growth is good for people who are from H/W, VLSI background.

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department?
Work environment is good. People are cooperative and good opportunity to pust your voice at any level…. Communication b/w employees and management is good as for as i think.

Work pressure/Work – life balance. Well organized teams and work culture, This is a big plus point for ST. In fact ST kind of forces its employees to make a balance in their work and personal life, many forced leaves…n not much work load. Fixed daily 9.30 -5.30 routine job.

Satisfaction with salary and quality of work. Salary…is not good. Ur take home salary could be very less, but yea still fair enough. for freshers its around 5 LPA package but take home would be around 30000 PM, Quality of work will be different from one person to another... People are expected to do their job independently here based on their skills set.

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent? All type of work…. product development as well as services( for internal ST only, not for others I think), basically its a semiconductor product development company

Job security. Its Good. There is no policy of firing in ST India (especially), but they do lot of cost cutting

Technology/Platform/Language your cos work. Many technologies…both in H/w and S/W domain. Everything as per latest technologies in Embedded software and Hardware fields…also core IT like JAVA. .NET etc

Some positives and negatives of the company.
Positive – your work and life balance, brand, cool work culture
Negative – I don’t think anything, but yea i m sure it would be different for others. May b somewhat take home salary…

Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why? For freshers it’s good to join this company. If they plan for further studies or so…they can manage that being here and for experienced people I think may not be a good option if their priority is money.,.. Also for freshers who want to develop their career technically being with organization, ST is a good option.

Vital Statistics: Fresher salary, Total No of employees, India headcount, Normal %age salary hikes or any
bonuses
freshers its around 5 LPA package
employees no. around 50000(world wide), 1700+ (India)
Average hike 15-20%
yeah annual bonus based on performance
Location : STM Noida

IBM Solutions review

IBM– i will say .. IBM is one of the least paying companies in the Indian market these days … well ..about work culture .. IBM is second in world as far as ppl management is concerned .. but that not for IGSI India .. in which we ppl are .. but still its good in India too. Another thing .. there is very little chances u will find some real development work (which is so called cream in industry) going in IBM .. except for in ISL(IBM software labs) .. most of the work ppl are working on is either maintenance or support ..Well.. its a big name .. so u can cash upon it in ur future career ..that’s the best part..

Career growth and onsite opportunities?
Career Growth– doubtful.. most of the projects are support one and all of us know what we can learn out of it .
.
Onsite oppo… most of the onsite works are taken care by IBM of that country so there is really a dearth of onsite opp in IBM ..If u are lucky enough then u can get a chance after 2 yrs provided ur manager must be happy with u [not with ur work..i guess u got what i mean to say .]

How is work environment and how efficient is the communication b/w teams or department?
Work environment
is kool — the best part in IBM rather only gud thing ..work pressure is ok types.. no one will force u to work so and so .. its just like a gov company dude ..regarding communication , i must say that .. conducting meeting with out any conclusion is acommon practice out here .. If someone feels bore .. he/she will call a meeting ..

Work pressure/Work – life balance: As i already mentioned .. work pressure is not much .. so life will be kool .. will get lots of time for family etc ……….. life rocks..

Satisfaction with salary and quality of work: IBM is famous for underpaying its employees and moreover increment is like 5-7%

Work quality .. pathetic,,,, IBM is full of nuts .. in every projects 70% of the team members are nuts ,, they don’t know anything thus they are in IBM ..

What type of work they do: Product development, Services etc. Or if mix of these then what at percent?Mix types .. 70-30 %

Job security.secured .. these guys are crying for resources and u r taking about job sec.. u r fully secured here..

Do you recommend your company to others? Yes or No and Why?When you join IBM as a fresher, IBM pays more.. no technical choice !
When you become 2 yrs experienced, IBM pays less compared to others .. you become slightly technical ,gain name ,fame, confidence , brand name, When you become more experienced ,you feel you are lagging behind in the race.. you approach manager asking for more .. and he knows what to do for you .. so I would say ..as a fresher join IBM .. u r in the best place that time ..and after 2 yrs ,decide what u want...
